Some batteries contain lead, cadmium and mercury and if you throw them in your rubbish bin the chances are they will end up in landfill, if these chemicals pollute the soil and water they can have the potential to harm human health.
Like other materials that are recycled battery recycling will save natural resources, reducing the need to mine for raw materials in turn saving CO2 emissions.
